This necklace was created for a national competition that required participants to use a provided vintage button, with an emphasis on incorporating viking knit. My first thought was to set the button into a polymer clay base. A single strand of viking knit seemed too plain, and that’s when my imagination began to soar.

Various beads and bead caps from my stash grew organically out of the clay as I worked, becoming the perfect foundation for multiple strands of viking knit in complementing colors. "Weaving the weave" gave the design a wind-blown, flowing vibe that captures movement and life. This unique creation was honored with an Honorable Mention in the competition.

Viking knit is an ancient wire-weaving technique that dates back to the first century BC. Used historically for trimming clothing, binding materials, and crafting jewelry, this technique has stood the test of time. Today, we use it primarily for jewelry, but its strength and durability make it a versatile craft. I’ve had the privilege of learning and teaching this art form to other artists, making it a deeply personal and treasured skill.

Why Ezekiel's Wheel?

Ezekiel's vision, as described in the Bible, inspired the name for this necklace. In 593 BC, while in captivity in Babylon, Ezekiel was shown a wondrous vision from God: a wheel with many moving parts, faces, eyes, and wings, whirling and flowing with the spirit of God. It was a profound display of God’s omnipotence and omnipresence—an intricate symphony of elements moving in perfect harmony with the Spirit.

"Whithersoever the spirit was to go, they went, thither was their spirit to go; and the wheels were lifted up over against them: for the spirit of the living creature was in the wheels."Ezekiel 1:20 (KJV)

This vision resonated deeply as I completed the piece. Its layered, flowing design reminds me of the interconnected movement of God’s spirit. When photographing it for this listing, the name “Ezekiel’s Wheel” came to me clearly, as though it was meant to be.
