The Butterfly Counts... Desk Clock

"The Butterfly Counts not months but moments, and has time enough"  is the verse on the back of this raised birdhouse clock which is covered with a patchwork of calm blue color.

Clocks have become my passion project. Thinking beyond time and space each one is a functional piece of art that evokes an emotion or memory of a place and time. Everything is designed around that idea and hopefully points to something in each of us that is creative and fun.

Beginning with wooden or cardboard forms, my clocks are made with disparate pieces and are assembled to be the host for the layers upon layers of colorful polymer clay. Taking many hours of work, each piece of clay is created from single blocks of color, combined, cut, stamped, manipulated and assembled into patterns. Small pieces are individually formed and gilded or strung across the surfaces of the clay to build up a design.

Nothing starts with a fully formed design or pattern but rather takes its own path as it is being built. Did I say that it takes HOURS of work? Yes, but to me it is also hours of fulfillment  to carry the work thru the process to arrive at a beautiful and fun piece of art.

The Butterfly Counts is a birdhouse sitting in a garden of blue and purple flowers. Green leaves, fronds and vines play across the surface in a pattern specially created for this clock. The roof is a basket weave that dips down to provide a shelter over the rustic doorway. Although it appears as a birdhouse for the little bluebird, which is ALWAYS present on my clock, it is really a functional clock ticking away each beautiful moment of life.

Even though perched on a pedestal, the entire house is very stable. We do recommend that it be placed a little above eye level to view the clock face and away from cluttered work areas.

The clock face is battery run, with a pull tab to start it. The clock can be removed from its home in the house and the time adjusted with the pull pin, then replaced.

Each clock is securely assembled and the clay cured in place to be sturdy for light handling….BUT THESE ARE NOT FOR SMALL CHILDREN! Use care when handling because tiny pieces can be broken off and cannot be replaced.

These are one of a kind pieces of art! As such they are each signed, dated and copyrighted.

The Butterfly Counts is approx 9" high and 5" across it's widest part.
